In 1988, the Singapore Dance Theater was created. Ther first performance of this company wasn’t until March of 2005. Although it is a relative new company, this is Singapore’s most notable and premiere ballet company. The choreographer is varied and the training strict. Performances include everything by well known contemporary and modern dance guest choreographers to the classics such as the Nutcracker and Romeo and Juliet. The Singapore company trains with and has an alliance with the Australian Ballet. Through working with such a technically sound and older more experienced dance company, Singapore Dance Theater is becoming very well known and very beloved and frequented by travellers staying at some of the best hotels in Singapore. Once a year the company presents a festival series. This is all outside, in the park where audience members have picnics and wine while the ballet happens around them. The festival, called Ballet Under the Stars, has become quite a popular event.

Some of the modern companies, a little more on the edge, include the Odyssey Dance Theatre and The Arts Company. Also well known is the company EcNad. Both of these companies offer creative alternatives to traditional ballet and performances tend to be very high energy .

There are also companies of various traditional styles of dance. One such company out of Singapore is called Sri Warisan. This company was created and founded in 1997. This company is the leader on the scene of traditional Malay dance companies. The choreography is often times a mix of traditional and more modern contemporary styles. The performers, about 30, are trained in all disciplines, dance but also including theater, music and multi-media technology. Along with the performers, the company includes a group of 15 full time office workers, and more than 250 students. All are dedicated to opening dance and the understanding of performance art to the general public, of all ages.
