Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in Cape Town
Posted by in TravelThe busiest destination in Cape Town is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Located between Table Mountain and Robben island, V&A sits in the center of Cape Town’s historic, working harbour. The area was designed to utilize existing infrastructure to preserve the harbor’s rich heritage.
The waterfront is home to countless shops, offices, restaurants, and entertainment venues. There are also numerous hotels in the area, including five star Cape Town hotels, as well as luxury apartments.
The harbour itself was created in 1860 under the orders of Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Alfred. He named the two basins after himself and his mother. The development project takes its name from the two basins. In a tribute to the harbour’s past, buildings from earlier eras have been rennovated and converted for modern use, such as the 19th century prison that is now a famous hotel.
V&A Waterfront is the home of Nobel Square. Here visitors will find statues of the four South Africans who has been honored with the Nobel Peace Prize: F.W. de Klert, Albert Luthuli, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu. Other attractions at the waterfront include the South African Maritime Museum, Two Oceans Aquarium, and the Nelson Mandela Gateway where ferries depart to Robben island. Ferries also make trips to Simon’s Town, Hout Bay, and the seal colonies on Duiker and Seal Islands.
In addition to hundreds of shops and restaurants, visitors can take special tours departing from V&A. These include helicopter tours of the city, boat tours, and whale and shark watching excursions.
