New York Arts
Posted by in TravelWhen in New York there is a lot to take in. Deciding on what to do can be a challenge in and of its self. Shopping to Broadway, uptown to downtown, tourist attractions to neighborhoods, opera to rock and roll. One thing no to miss is something from the New York art scene. If your preference is the large well know established museum then uptown is your place. With the Metropolitan Museum of Art situated along side Central Park this is a magnificent museum in a magnificent setting. Halls of Roman, Greek and Egyptian arts occupy only part of the enormous gallery spaces of the first floor. I always loved a visit to the Mid-Evil hall as a child where rows of armor clad soldiers and horses stand. When I got a little older I really began to enjoy the American Arts and Crafts wing. An open airy gallery with a giant sky light and a wall being the facade of Federal period bank gives this gallery the feeling of being out side. In this gallery are reconstructed room from a Frank Lloyd house, a Tiffany glass mosaic fountain that was never installed until discovered by the Met in a where house in New York City many years ago. Arts and crafts furniture and decorative garden sculptures complete the look and feel of the room. From this gallery are two others I always enjoyed. From the balcony of the second floor there is the galleries with the Mets musial instrument collection and through the doorway of the Federal Period bank facade is the Mets furniture collection. Both galleries featuring the finest craftsmanship in each category from antiquity to more recent times. From the best New York hotel you can easily access the area the Met and many other world famous museums are. The Guggenheim and Frick Collection are adjacent to the Met. Other less conventional art can be found downtown. The Village, Soho and nooks and cranny of lower Manhattan are filled with shops and galleries where an amazing variety of arts and crafts can be found. In mid-town there is the MOMA, Museum of Modern Art there world famous collection of modern art spans over 100 years of innovation in design form and function. What to do can be difficult, choosing categories of importance can be helpful and then decisions within those categories are easier to make.
